What is a Domain?

Every webpage on the internet has an address.

Most are secondary or subsidiary addresses at the servers which host them. (For instance, on one of our regional websites you might be: www.highlandsnsw.com.au/yourname)

A domain is where the main internet address is in your own name (e.g. www.yourname.com.au).

Do I need a domain?

Not necessarily.

Many small businesses are not likely to need a domain name. It can be just as effective to position your business on a webpage hosted on someone else's domain (such as your ISP provider, or a portal site, such as our regional websites).

You can then use this address in all your other media advertising.

However, if your business is strongly identified with its name (or brand name or trademark), then a domain name can be a useful way to extend your marketing strategies.

In fact, if you already have a webpage, by investing in a domain name you could actually reduce the amount of money you spend elsewhere on advertising and get a better return for your business.

DOMAIN REGISTRATION

You would normally only register a domain name if you had a business with a trademark or marketable name, or if you wished to use the internet in your other advertising to market yourself in a memorable way (as you would a trademark, logo or business name).
